Sorghum is a staple source of nutrition and along with other millets it has received a lot of attention in recent years for their beneficial effects. It has become a healthy alternative meal due to its high nutrient profile. It can be used to make dishes from breakfast to snacks.

Jonna contains a variety of nutrients that are extremely helpful to wellness. This grain is prized as a healthy alternative to refined flour, it is rich in fiber and helps improve digestion. It is a good source of various phytochemicals like tannins, phenolic acids and anthocyanins. Being gluten free it is also found to be beneficial to the body. It is rich in protein, iron, magnesium and is said to improve bone health significantly.

How to use Jowar

It is commonly used to make roti and other types of flat breads. Apart from that, it is also used to make upma, dosa, porridge and pancake can be made. A variety of guilt free snacks such as chakli, khakhra and dhebra can be made using flour made from this grain.

Cultivation highlights

This crop does not tolerate water logging, hence requires soil with proper drainage. Weeds should be controlled at early stages. It is relatively free of pests and diseases. Storage

These grains should be stored in airtight containers with tight-fitting lids or closures. Glass, plastic or zip lock plastic bags can all be used, as long as they are airtight. Dried neem leaves can be used in preserving these grains. Spread dried neem leaves at the base of the clean and dry container. Mix dried neem leaves in the grain and put the grains on the dried leaves base. Before closing the lid of the container spread a few dried leaves at the top.

Availability

Sorghum is grown in two seasons of the year in our farms, monsoon and early summer and we try to store it scientifically to be available most of the year.
