Ulli bondu is loaded with essential nutrients like Vitamins A, C, B2 or thymine, copper, phosphorus, magnesium and potassium. They are a good source of fiber, which is said to aid in regular bowel movements. They are high in vitamin C and vitamin A, both of which assist to strengthen the immune system and said to protect from illnesses.
How to use Spring Onion
In a green onion, both the bulb and the green stem can be used. The leaves have a stronger flavor than the bulb, which is sweeter than a typical onion. That means they are perfect as a seasonal side dish when grilled or roasted whole. Use the bulbs and tops separately to get two uses out of them. The bulbs don’t need to be peeled and can be used in any recipe that calls for ordinary onions.
They are especially good in braises, frittatas and soups when cooked with other vegetables. The tops can be sliced and used raw to salads, sautéed and mixed with spaghetti, or sprinkled over pizza and pasta. They are a key ingredient in Indo Chinese dishes and in fish preparations.
This crop requires soil with good drainage to avoid any fungal diseases/rots. The soil needs to be kept moist and weed free during the crucial phases of the crop. Green onion should be kept in the refrigerator. Because they contain more moisture than mature onions, they may mold if left out at room temperature for more than a few days. They will last approximately two weeks if kept in the crisper drawer, firmly sealed in a plastic bag. It is recommended to cut their roots and eliminate any yellow leaves before storing them.
They can be grown during late summer and early monsoon. We grow them twice a year, so that they can be made available at all times.
